Study: WI Hospitals & Health Systems Critical for State, Local Economies

Door County Medical Center StaffWisconsin hospitals and health systems are well-known for providing high-quality and accessible care for Wisconsin citizens, helping to keep our communities healthier. According to a new study released from the Wisconsin Hospital Association (WHA), those communities’ economic health also experience tremendous benefits because of local hospital and health system vibrancy.

“Hospitals and health care systems rank as one of the state’s largest employers and strongest economic drivers,” says WHA President and CEO Eric Borgerding. “Wisconsin can retain and attract talented people to our state because the health care sector provides family-supporting jobs across a wide spectrum of education and skills – from high school to an advanced degree.”

Door County Medical Center (DCMC) provides access to vital health care services 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, with more than 100,000 patient visits in 2019.

“In addition to providing quality health care, DCMC also contributes to the local economy through the people we directly employ, payroll taxes, and the goods and services we purchase,” says DCMC President and CEO Brian Stephens.

DCMC supports other local businesses through “multiplier effects” that are generated in three ways:

  • The hospital’s purchases create industry revenues for local businesses and “indirect” jobs and income for their employees.
  • Employee purchases generate “induced” income and jobs for other businesses in the community.
  • Wages and salaries are subject to federal, state and local taxes.

What is Door County Medical Center’s Impact on the Community?

  • Provides jobs for 667 hospital workers and supports an additional 552 jobs created indirectly through hospital purchases and employee economic activity for a total of 1,219 jobs.
  • Accounts for nearly $136,997,824 in economic activity. The direct effect of DCMC is $82,335,866 and includes revenues from services provided by the hospital.
  • Contributes $90,236,461 in total income to the community.

DCMC also offers an array of outreach programs and activities to help meet the community’s broader health and social needs.

“The importance of DCMC  to Door County’s economic ecosystem cannot be overstated. Health care is a key industry to the county, paying above average wages to the full spectrum of employee types. Health care is also a critical quality of life factor impacting the retention and attraction of high wage jobs in other industries, as well as foundationally crucial to people when they are choosing a place to live,” according to Jim Schuessler, Executive Director of Door County Economic Development Corporation.
