We are pleased to announce Shane Colvin, M.D., is now providing Pediatric services at Door County Medical Center.
"I'm really looking forward to providing care at DCMC," Dr. Colvin says," because of the priority the hospital gives to patient care, and because of the excellence of the other physicians and medical staff. And," he adds, "I simply love Wisconsin. Door County's natural beauty, orchards, and small town community setting are all wonderful aspects of living here—I find great joy driving up the peninsula without any particular destination just to see what new things there are to discover."
Dr. Colvin grew up in Kalispell, Montana, near Glacier National Park. He received his undergraduate degrees from Montana State University in 2009, double majoring in Cell Biology & Neuroscience, and in Biochemistry, and received his medical degree at the University of Washington School of Medicine, Seattle in 2018. In 2021, Dr. Colvin completed the University of Wisconsin Pediatric Residency Program at the American Family Children's Hospital in Madison.
The services Dr. Colvin will be providing at Door County Medical Center include, but are not limited to: Newborn Exams, Well Child Exams, School Physicals, Sports Physicals, clinic visits, sick visits in the setting of hospital services, attendance at newborn deliveries, community service and public health outreach, as well as additional special initiatives in the setting of DCMC healthcare.
"I knew I was going to be a Pediatrician when I started college in 2003," Dr. Colvin recalls, adding, "Children have a contagious desire to both learn and teach. They possess an imaginative energy for life and self-discovery that has always inspired me. My wife often teases me by saying I 'speak kid.' By guiding a patient through their early years of health there is a potential for making a lifelong impact. If I am able to see patients grow into adulthood, then care for their children, I would be incredibly humbled and grateful."
In addition to being a Pediatrician, Dr. Colvin is also a musician and holds a BA in Music Performance from Montana State University (2009) and an MA in Music Therapy from the University of Limerick, in the Republic of Ireland (2013).
Dr. Colvin draws a direct connection between music and medicine, stating, "Music finds its way into all areas of my life, including medicine." He continues, "Improvising is necessary in pediatrics as each patient is unique and refreshingly unpredictable. And," he adds, "music can help offer flexibility in challenging situations. It is especially useful in reducing stress, defusing tense situations, and externalizing deep emotion around illness. I sing Irish lullabies to infants who can't sleep, favorite tunes during small procedures for distraction, and more renditions of 'Happy Birthday' than I can count. If I am humming it means I'm content."

"To come alongside someone in a time of need or vulnerability is a privilege and a responsibility not to be taken lightly," Dr. Colvin says. "As a Pediatrician," he continues, "it is essential to actively listen to concerns upfront and prioritize them. My goal is to be thorough, intentional, and thoughtful in both asking questions and performing a physical exam. By being reliable in this approach, my hope is patients and families will feel heard, as well as feel they are receiving the best care available."
