The Challenges of Helping Those with Behavioral Health Issues

“Access to behavioral services in our community is a significant issue,” Door County Medical Center’s Behavioral Health Coordinator, Barb Johnson-Giese, said. An unfortunate reality for medical professionals in the Door County community and beyond is that physicians are increasingly pressured to diagnose and treat mental and behavioral health problems that they are often not adequately trained to diagnose or treat.

Resources Available to Address Mental Health Concerns Among Older Adults

In 2021, eight people in Door County died by suicide. Six of these (75%) were age 60 or older. In recognition of May as Mental Health Awareness Month, Door County Department of Health & Human Services (DHHS) and Senior Life Solutions at Door County Medical Center (DCMC) are joining together to call attention to this critical issue for seniors in our community.

Coping With Uncertainty: Techniques for Supporting Your Emotional and Physical Health During the Coronavirus Pandemic

During the past year, the coronavirus pandemic, and the parallel economic recession caused by the pandemic, has resulted in a steep increase in mental illness across the country. In fact, the Kaiser Family Foundation reports the average share of American adults reporting symptoms of anxiety disorder and/or depressive disorder has risen from 11% in January 2019 to 41% in January 2021.
