At Door County Medical Center (DCMC), we foster a sense of community and belonging that extends beyond clinical settings, particularly through our Rehabilitation Services. This article highlights how our rehab services engage with the community through events, educational programs, and partnerships. Our comprehensive, patient-centered approach ensures that individuals of all ages receive the care and support they need to achieve their health goals.
Beyond Clinic Walls
DCMC values family and community involvement in health and fitness. Our therapists participate in various initiatives, including Parkinson's, joint, and 'Stepping On' classes. These programs are designed to help individuals maximize their potential and maintain their health.
Our therapists and outreach staff work closely with local YMCAs, offering aquatic therapy, free screenings, and addressing health-related questions. Programs like "Ask a PT" or "Ask an AT" provide the community with direct access to our knowledgeable staff, helping individuals manage minor aches and pains or directing them to appropriate care.
"Our collaboration with local YMCAs allows us to bring our expertise directly to the community," says Andy Anderson, PTA, MHA, Director of Rehabilitation Services. "Through these partnerships, we can offer valuable health screenings and advice that might otherwise be inaccessible."
Our therapists provide services throughout the community, including:
- Door County Schools (Occupational, Physical Therapy, and Athletic Training): "Educational partnerships with NWTC and other schools allow us to inform and train students on opportunities in the medical field, fostering the next generation of healthcare professionals," adds Anderson.
- Athletic events, performance enhancement, and injury prevention
- Birth to Three Program
- Door County Senior Center
- Businesses in Door County (as part of Occupational Health for Business)
Further, participation in events like the Algoma Night Out and the Kewaunee County Resource Fair strengthens DCMC's connections with community members.
Supporting Early Childhood Development
One of our key initiatives for children is the Birth to Three Program. Our occupational and physical therapy staff collaborate with the County of Door to provide in-home therapy services for children from birth to three years old. The program focuses on helping children meet developmental milestones and educating families and caregivers on managing disabilities. Working alongside the Department of Health Services and other community partners, we ensure comprehensive in-home care throughout Door County. As children transition out of the program, those suitable for school-based programs continue to receive the support they need.
"Our Birth to Three Program empowers families with the knowledge and skills they need to support their children's growth and development," Anderson explains.
Comprehensive Rehabilitation Services for All Ages
DCMC's Rehabilitation Services cater to the needs of individuals of all ages and abilities, providing quality care across various settings. We offer many services, including inpatient and outpatient facilities, home health care, nursing home care, and in-school therapy.
Our specialty services, such as pelvic health, lymphedema management, and vertigo treatments, ensure patients can access advanced care locally.
At our Sister Bay clinic, the R.I.S.E. class (Reducing the Incidence of Falls through Strengthening and Exercise) helps individuals enhance their balance and home safety, contributing to a healthier, safer Door County.
"Our award-winning therapists work closely with physicians and surgeons to provide comprehensive care," notes Anderson. "We're dedicated to helping our patients recover from injuries, manage chronic conditions, and achieve their highest potential. Direct access or self-referral to physical therapy is available, and we see patients at several convenient sites throughout Door and Kewaunee counties.
