Seeking a fulfilling career in healthcare? Door County Medical Center (DCMC) offers a host of benefits and opportunities that make it an exceptional place to work.
Since its transformation into a Catholic healthcare organization in 1999, DCMC has embraced a mission that carries the healing ministry of Jesus Christ, particularly for those in need. Brian Stephens, CEO of Door County Medical Center, reflects on the organization's enduring commitment: "More than 20 years later, we proudly continue this mission, improving the health and well-being of all, especially the underserved within our communities." At DCMC, empowerment, engagement, and a strong sense of community define the workplace culture, creating an environment where employees thrive professionally and personally.
Empowered and Engaged
When you spend the majority of your life at work, culture is everything. Working at Door County Medical Center means putting patients first, providing world-class care and having the balance you need to be your best self. DCMC is an award-winning hospital because of the shared passion for patient care.
"When I first interviewed at Door County Medical Center, it was made clear to me that the culture was the most important thing to our leaders and our staff—you really see that every single day," says Danielle Bloniarz, RN. "From our dedication to serving all patients, regardless of resources, to our constant pursuit of new ideas and innovations in healthcare, Door County Medical Center truly stands out as a fantastic place to work."
Jodi Griep, MA adds, "When I was hired, I made it clear that I'm a mom and that balancing parenthood and work is important to me. I've been fortunate that they've fully respected that; I've never had to miss any of my kids' school events because they accommodate those days off."
Support and Recognition
Joining DCMC means becoming part of a healthcare community where everyone—from physicians to staff—works together to provide the best care possible. Our shared passion for patient care fosters a culture of empowerment, support, and appreciation.
We deeply value our team members and strive to recognize their outstanding contributions. "Our BEE, DAISY, and Mission and Values awards are a testament to the excellence and dedication our staff exhibit in patient care," affirms Christa Krause MHA, MSN, RN, CPHQ, DCMC's Chief Nursing Officer. These awards serve to highlight the commitment our team demonstrates in providing exceptional service to our patients and community.
For example, DCMC's DAISY Committee presents 4 awards annually, with each recipient receiving a certificate and a spotlight article on the DAISY Foundation website. Recipients are also eligible for numerous benefits and opportunities including grants, reduced American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) certification fees, tuition scholarships, and conference opportunities.
"We are so fortunate to have over 200 nurses at DCMC that work tirelessly to care for those in need and touch so many lives through their skill and compassion," says Krause. "The DAISY Award," she continues, "is a way for patients, community members and fellow staff to recognize these efforts."
SPARC: Start the Path to a Rewarding Career
Despite the nationwide nursing shortage impacting communities everywhere, DCMC addresses the challenge head-on with SPARC—Start the Path to a Rewarding Career. This on-the-job training program supports aspiring Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs), Certified Medical Assistants (CMAs), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), and Registered Nurses (RNs) by offering financial assistance and on-the-job hours for licensure and certification.
"DCMC is dedicated to eliminating barriers to successful healthcare careers. We understand that taking time off from employment in order to complete an education program may not be possible, even if tuition is covered," says Brian Stephens.
In collaboration with Northeast Wisconsin Technical College, participants gain valuable education, training, and clinical hours, paving the way for a successful healthcare career.
Beauty and Vibrancy
Door County stands out as one of the most exceptional and breathtaking destinations nationwide. Millions of visitors are drawn here annually, yet only a fortunate few are privileged to call it home.
Holly Swain, PA-C was captivated by Door County's natural beauty upon discovering an open position. She recalls driving up for the first time and immediately falling in love with the natural landscape: "Just steps outside your door you can soak in the beauty and diversity, from water, trees to the people."
Richard Hogan, MD echoes this sentiment, expressing gratitude for the county's abundance. "What's not to love? We have four seasons—we have more miles of shoreline than any other county in the lower 48." He continues, "There's always something to do, we have a great community, we have a great rural hospital here–I feel very blessed."
In Door County, work-life balance isn't merely a concept—it's ingrained in our way of life. "I've practiced in a couple different locations and this population wants to be outside," says Rory Johnson, MD, who works at the Door County Medical Center Sister Bay Clinic. "They want to get out to the water, out to the running trails, on the bike and playing pickleball. It's inspiring as a doctor to hear that folks are so active."
